S-equol
What is s-equol?
S-equol is a natural compound produced by specific intestinal bacteria that convert daidzein, a soy-derived isoflavone, into its bioactive form. It preferentially binds to oestrogen receptor β (ERβ), a mechanism believed to contribute to its clinically studied effects on menopausal health, bone health, cardiovascular health and cognitive health. However, only 30–50% of people possess the specific gut bacteria required to produce S-equol naturally. Direct supplementation delivers the bioactive form without relying on gut microbial conversion.
